Special Edition of Folklore Magazine: Post-World War II Immigration to Saskatchewan

Pitches for the Folklore Magazine Special Edition are due on October 20, 2026.

Published quarterly since 1979, Folklore is a unique venue for sharing stories of Saskatchewan. Folklore shares history through the lens of everyday people's lived experiences and local, regional, and community histories. “People stories” are one of the magazine’s strengths—stories of events, daily life, family, humour, and unique experiences.

This Special Edition is made possible by a generous bequest from longtime Folklore subscriber Lena Woolley, who passed in 2024. The Special Edition’s starting point is a theme touching on Lena's life: post-World War II immigration to SK.

What we’re looking for:

We’re looking for submissions that reflect a variety of perspectives on Saskatchewan post-war immigration, that reflect a diversity of time periods, experiences and angles, including (but not limited to) war brides, displaced persons and political refugees, economic migrants, people impacted by historical forces in the wake of WWII (up to and including the present day), and more.

Submissions should fall into one of the following categories:  

  • “People stories” – this includes first-person stories of events, daily life, family, humour, or personal/lived experiences that share what it is like to be in Saskatchewan

  • Researched historical articles with references

  • Oral histories – a written account of a story orally narrated in a conversation to the writer

  • Feature photographs – send in a photo you would like to share with a few lines providing some background

  • Book reviews

  • And more!

How to submit a pitch:

Before pitching, take a look at some previous issues of Folklore Magazine, and past special edition issues, to get an idea of the type of submissions we publish. Additionally, you can review our submission guidelines for more information and frequent questions.

Your pitch should outline the topic and scope of your submission, give an estimated word count, and, optionally, include any relevant experience or background about the topic. Send pitches to submissions@shfs.ca.

Anyone can publish in Folklore Magazine! If you have a literary or artistic piece that reveals original or interesting information about this aspect of Saskatchewan’s history, we encourage you to pitch your work. You do not have to be a professional writer to publish with Folklore Magazine, as we work with contributors of varying levels of experience.

Final articles will be up to 2000 words.

If your pitch is accepted, we will be in touch to notify you in early November. First drafts will be due by February, followed by a collaborative editing process ending in May. We reserve the right to edit your work (with your involvement) and cannot guarantee publication.

Paid rates:

Authors are paid $1.50 per column inch for published submissions, plus a complimentary copy. Authors are paid after their pieces are published. For folks being interviewed for a story, there is an honorarium of $100 and up to four complimentary copies.
