Storytelling

At the Saskatchewan History & Folklore Society, we believe that stories create a human connection and invoke an emotional response in one another.

Stories and narratives are a core part of human life, and storytelling through a critical, ethical lens is important in today’s world.

Storytelling encourages understanding and value connection, and through this newfound empathy, there is the potential to engage audiences as active participants. Stories can be transforming for the storyteller as well as their audience. In fact, stories are capable of engaging people at every level, depending on what resonates with each individual. From the mind to the heart to the imagination, stories pull people beyond their everyday lived experience, and into one that can be shared.

At the SHFS, we work to support storytelling in many forms, whether it be sharing out loud, through writing and poetry, or through other forms of expression. Everyone has a story, and every story is important!

At an SHFS story circle in fall 2017, storytellers engage in a memory mapping activity to spark story ideas.

What is storytelling?

Stories are being told every day. At coffee shops, on social media, in hardcover books, and with microphones at podiums, people are sharing stories with audiences both big and small. These stories are changing the landscapes in which we live. Storytelling, although we may not always realize it, is intricately interwoven into our everyday lives.

Stories are powerful in the way they construct realities. However, they are also powerful for the ways they can deconstruct realities and bring to light transformative social change.

podcast: "Life is a story...tell it well”

This episode of SaskScapes was recorded live in Saskatoon during a story-sharing gathering hosted by the SHFS at Prairie Prism. "Life is a story...tell it well" was the theme and the great folks included in this podcast did just that. You'll hear stories that range from fast-food drive-in antics, to Christmas in Nigeria, to the heartbreak of the judicial system.

SaskScapes is a podcast featuring the stories of arts, culture and heritage in Saskatchewan. The series is produced and hosted by Kevin Power.
