Wood Moutain Hub gathering, 2025: Visit to the east block of Grasslands National Park.

Out & About: Saskatchewan Histories and Landscapes

While on the former historic trail walks, I always felt nourished by the sky, wind and land, and by the geological, social, and historical knowledge of friends from previous walks and new friends from places we visit. Being on land with one another has become a treasured part of the summer.

In 2025, as coordinators of the experience, Hugh Henry and I moved from a historic trail-walk format to a historic-sites hub format, staying for longer periods at Wood Mountain and Willow Bunch. The more inclusive hub format meant happier feet overall, and also made it possible for folk wanting a little more comfort to join us.

-Simone Hengen, Volunteer Out & About Coordinator

Similar to the Historic Trail Walk program it has evolved from, “Out & About” invites the public to engage in a direct, meaningful connection with the land and the people who live there—Indigenous peoples, settler descendants, and newcomers. Trekkers will visit a central hub community and complete short day-trip walks in the area, as well as attend gatherings to meet local people and learn about their histories. Along with promoting lifelong fitness, “Out & About” provides an opportunity for participants to reflect on the land and its history, themselves, and their place in the world.
